Eleonas Bioremediation - Athens Urban Transformation

Vienna Technical University - Städtebau - 2018

Eleonas (Elaionas; Olive grove) is a neighbourhood in Athens. As its name implies, it used to be an olive grove and its production of olive oil was important to the economy of the ancient state of Athens. Since 1945 the olive grove has disappeared, the area has become filled with largely unregulated polluting industry and the river has been covered with concrete.

This project aims to restore parts of the olive grove and achieve a revitalisation of the area through cleaning it up through phytoremediation. The proposal includes renaturalising the river and reestablishing agricultural production as well as markets. The long-term goal would be to extend the project beyond Eleonas to help deindustrialise Athens and increase its resilience to climate change.
